1917. Millions of Europeans, many farmers, had been at war for three years, and national food supplies were suffering as a result. The Italian state ordered 6000 American tractors for the purpose of "state ploughing". The tractor concept was still in its infancy. But demand was high, and Fiat saw opportunities for improvement.

At the 1948 Mechanical Enginerring Exhibition in Turin, a new series of tractors had been shown to the puplic for the first time. March the following year, Fiat began taking orders for their new and innovative 600 tractor.
The world of agriculture was evolving. And so was Fiat.

Fiat's tractor division became more organized as it grew.
Having only two tractors on offer, Fiat developed the 200, 300, 400 and 500 tractors. Offering new technical innovations, and a large span of horsepower output, their design would come to influence future Fiat tractors.

In the early 60's, Fiat launched an effort to streamline their lineup, with the intent to make their tractors easier to market and service. Introduced in 1965, the first official series of Fiat tractors, designed by Pinninfarina, would be known as the "Diamond Series".

By 1967, Fiat was leading the European market, and its 50th anniversary was coming up. For the occasion, a new series was developed. The new series would be based on the Diamante series, with a name marking the "Golden Anniversary" of Fiat's "marriage to the land".

The 70's were a busy and exciting time for the Italian company. Fiat Trattori S.P.A had just been formed in 1974, counting four factories domestically, four factories abroad, while the millionth Fiat tractor rolled of the line. And in 1975, the revolutionary 80 series was revealed.
